How to Break the Ice at a Networking Event

Although attending networking events can be incredibly valuable, the “networking” part of a networking event can be incredibly uncomfortable.

For some people starting a conversation with a stranger hearkens memories of asking someone to dance at a middle school dance – completely and hopelessly awkward.

Fortunately, breaking the ice at a networking event doesn’t have to mean being tongue tied fumbling through clumsy introductions.

Armed with the a few “Chat-up Lines” even the biggest wallflowers can work a crowded room of potential contacts.

Chat-up Line 1: What am I interrupting?

This simple question almost always works because you’re acknowledging that you’re interrupting, you’re being jovial about it, and most importantly you’re not derailing the current conversation with your presence.

Chat-up Line 2: Can I join you?

This question is typically best to ask during a networking event where seating is completely open usually when there is food and beverage being served. No one ever says no to this line. Keep in mind that it is really important to say something, anything, as you sit down because if you don’t it becomes really awkward to introduce yourself afterwards.

Chat-up Line 3: I like your [fill in the blank]

Best used one on one, especially if there is no visible name on their badge, another way to personally recognize someone is to acknowledge something physical about their person, “That’s a snazzy purse” or “I like your jacket” or “Nice tie,” then ask their name and introduce yourself.

Chat-up Line 4: What brings you to the event today?

Everyone comes to a networking event with some type of objective and, with any luck, that objective may be complimentary to your objective. Even if their reason for being at the networking event is not clearly defined, most people usually answer this question, even if superficially.

If you’re a veteran networker you’ve likely used some derivation of these Chat-up Lines as well as some of your own tried and true Chat-up Lines. I end with this request – share your networking prowess with the newbie networkers.
